Shortly after the birth of my second son in June 1996, I began walking regularly. After a month, I added aerobics to my routine and by the following spring, I had replaced walking with jogging. I was jogging 2 miles 3 days a week. That summer, I signed up to run my first 5K, although I had no idea how long a 5K was until I filled out the registration form. I only had a couple weeks to build my running to 3 miles.

Since that time, I've run numerous 5Ks, 10Ks, a few duathlons, and a half marathon. I even ran while pregnant with my fourth child until 30 weeks of pregnancy when I went on bedrest.
